There are many ways to express "but" ("however") in Chinese language.
这里的生活紧张是紧张， 可是很有意思。
zhè lǐ de shēng huó jǐn zhāng shì jǐn zhāng kě shì hěn yǒu yì si
Life here is full of tension, but it is very interesting.
这条房子很不错， 但是租金太贵了。
zhè tiáo fáng zi hěn bú cuò dàn shì zū jīn tài guì le
The apartment is great, but the rent is too expensive.
但是 and 可是 are often used in complex sentences where the first clause begins with 虽然:
我虽然来北京好几年了， 可是很多地方都没去过。
wǒ suī rán lái běi jīng hǎo jǐ nián le kě shì hěn duō dì fāng dōu méi qù guò
Although I have been staying in Beijing for several years, I haven’t been to many places.
这个孩子虽然不大， 但是知道的事可不少。
zhè ge hái zi suī rán bú dà dàn shì zhī dào de shì kě bù shǎo
Although the child is very young, he knows a lot.
他的事业很成功， 不过家庭很不幸福。
