趁 (chèn) is a commonly used Chinese preposition meaning “to grab” or “to take advantage of” a favorable situation or a good opportunity to do something.
It usually precedes a noun or a phrase describing the situation:
我想趁下午没事去换驾照。
wǒ xiǎng chèn xià wǔ méishì qù huàn jiàzhào
I have no things to do in the afternoon. So I am going to take this opportunity to change my driving license.
趁这个机会我讲几句话。
chèn zhè ge jī huì wǒ jiǎng jǐ jù huà
I would like to take this opportunity to say a few words.
钱以后可以挣,可是学业要趁年轻的时候学!
qián yǐ hòu kě yǐ zhēng, kě shì xué yè yào chèn nián qīng de shí hòu xué
You can earn money later but take the opportunity to study when you are young.
趁价钱比较低, 我们赶紧买这个东西。
chèn jiàqián bǐjiào dī, wǒmen gǎnjǐn mǎi zhège dōng xī
We grab the opportunity to buy this thing, while the price is relatively low.
趁 is also used in the following idioms:
趁热打铁 – chèn rè dǎ tiě – strike while the iron is hot
趁火打劫 – chèn huǒ dǎ jié – to profit from smb.’ misfortune
